Our floating shelves are finally up! I had them three quarters done a few weeks ago but it turns out I hadn’t put them in very well. And the last shelf I put in a place where I needed to drill through wood to get it in. So thanks dad! Now they’re perfect.
With our house being a new build, the rooms are a little on the small side. In our bedroom there was already a fitted wardrobe which left us room for a bed and a laundry basket. No chest of drawers. Not practical but not the end of the world either.
I decided the best solution was to get a bed which had storage underneath. Enter IKEA. We got the Malm bed which had two huge drawers underneath. After adding in those fabric separators, they were good to go for all our other clothing that would usually go in a chest of drawers.
The only problem with this plan is that the drawers take up the entire floor when opened which meant no room for bedside tables. So that’s where we came up with the floating shelf plan.
As you can see they’re not styled at all (sniggers) but we only just got them up and they’re more functional at this point. I don’t know if we’ll ever be those people who choose style over function.
Eventually once we’ve decided on colours, we’ll be painting this room too. And getting a lampshade! I’ve mentioned how much I hate the dirty beige colour that the entire house was painted in and so I can’t wait until it’s completely gone! We should have painted in here before adding the shelves but we have no idea what colour and we needed the shelves sooner.
Another small home improvement. Little by little we’re making this house a home and I love it more and more. I can’t believe it’s almost been a year that we’ve lived here.
