What I’ve Been Watching on Netflix Recently

Since I’ve been ill a lot this winter, Netflix has been a good friend of mine. So I thought I’d tell you about some of the things I’ve been watching.

The Good Place

Seasons: 2

maxresdefault

I first discovered this on a plane on our honeymoon and was immediately hooked. When we got home, the whole thing was on Netflix so I binged the rest. They’ve actually been on a winter break and are back now posting one episode a week.

Kirsten Bell plays Eleanor, a women who dies and ends up in heaven. The only problem is, she’s been mistaken for someone else and should actually be in hell because she was a terrible person.

It’s been a while since I found a comedy that just clicked with me. The Good Place literally makes me laugh out loud and the cast is awesome. I would definitely recommend watching.

Glow

Seasons: 1

So I may have binged the whole thing in a day #sorrynotsorry. Glow is about Glamorous Ladies Of Wrestling. In the 80s in LA a casting call was made for women that turned out to be for a women’s wrestling show.

The series follows the ladies journey from women off the street to wrestlers and stars Alison Brie (I know her best from Mad Men). I loved getting to know all the different characters and found the whole show uplifting. It certainly deserves the hype.

If you’re interested, there’s also a documentary on Netflix called Glow which is actually about the real Glow ladies. It was released back in 2012 and it’s so cool to see the parallels between real life and TV.

Jack Whitehall – Travels With My Father

Seasons: 1

321679

Always having been a fan of Jack Whitehall and travel shows, this programme ticked both boxes. Jack decides to go on a gap year style holiday and bring along his seventy something, super conservative dad along for the ride. Hilarity ensues.

I haven’t finished the whole season yet as it’s something I prefer to dip in and out of but so far I’ve loved it. If you’re a fan of this comedian then I definitely recommend giving it a go.

The Sinner

Seasons: 1

NUP_178471_0475

Starring Jessica Biel, The Sinner is a story about a seemingly normal housewife who stabs a random man to death on a crowded beach one day. The series explores why she did it. I saw people raving about this on Twitter so I added it to my list.

When I did come to watch it I finished the whole series in about 2 days. There’s more to it then you would think and I enjoyed going along for the ride. There were plenty of twists and the ending was satisfying.

Recommend if you like dramas, crimes and mysteries.

Zumbo’s Just Desserts

Seasons: 1

Zumbos-Just-Desserts

I was a bit behind the rest of the UK and I only started watching GBBO in 2016. Then it all changed and I refused to watch the new one – disappointing as I really loved the series.

I wasn’t intentionally looking for something to fill the GBBO shaped hole in my life but I found it with Zumbo’s Just Desserts. It’s a similar style to GBBO but it’s Australian and focused on desserts. Adriano Zumbo is a dessert king in Australia (seriously google some of his work, it’s astounding!) and is the main judge.

These are extraordinary desserts! Each episode, the dessert makers create a dessert based on a theme and then the two weakest battle it out in the Zumbo test. They have to make one of Zumbo’s masterpieces and they are damn hard! The lowest scorer leaves the game.

If you love GBBO (new or old) then this is a must watch. Though don’t watch when hungry!

Glitch

Seasons: 2

701e6a2c2cbcb8d46325649c9ca36a0a3a13a98c

I’m a big fan of the zombie genre and Glitch is an interesting take on it. It is wildly similar to Netflix show, The Returned (and the original French version) but the difference here is that the returnees literally climb out of their graves.

Set in Australia, 7 people return from the dead in perfect health and it’s up to a local policeman and doctor to figure out why and also protect them.

I loved the concept of this show but at times it was frustrating to watch. 2 seasons in and I have more questions than answers. They are apparently working on getting renewed for a third season but as it stands, I’m in a bit of a limbo.

I did enjoy the back stories of the returnees as some of them died over 100 years ago. But in terms of learning the how and why of the situation, I’m just a bit confused.

Watch at your own peril – maybe wait until a third season is announced?

The Mist

Seasons: 1

The_Mist_TV_Slider

Based on a Stephen king book, a town get’s suddenly overcome by mist which is full of terrifying things. I’ll start with a disclaimer: don’t get too invested in this as it’s already cancelled and ends on a cliffhanger.

This show had similar problems to Glitch in that I have more questions than answers at the end of it. The series was pretty much about the reactions to the mist and people trying to stay alive. You didn’t get much explanation as to how and why and it looks like you never will. Maybe I’ll have to pick up the book to find out…

Once again, watch at your own peril. But even more so!

Film & TV Reviews – March

Brooklyn (2015)

4 out of 5 stars

I really wanted to see this in the cinema but as usual I missed it. I recently got a chance to watch it and in a word it was lovely. It’s about an Irish girl who moves to America in the 1950s but after visiting home gets torn between both lives. The story was sweet and I especially loved the costume design. Women moving to America in the 19th and 20th century is a niche genre that I love so the film really appealed to me. It’s a special kind of struggle moving away from everyone and everything you know and back then it was so much harder so it’s a point of view that I gravitate towards. I was happy to hear that this film was originally a book so it’s now on my Amazon wish list.

Flipped (2010)

4 out of 5 stars

While looking for films to watch over the last few years, I’ve kept seeing the name of this film crop up. I always picked something else but after stumbling across a trailer for it on Youtube I found out what it was actually about. Set in the 1970s, Juli and Bryce are two average American 8 year olds who are complete opposites. Juli loves Bryce. Bryce hates Juli. That was what it said online. But what I didn’t realise was that the interest was in the way that the film plays out. You watch a few scenes from Bryce’s point of view, then it flips and you watch the same scenes all from Juli’s point of view, then it flips back to Bryce and so on. It’s funny how a story can change purely based on who’s telling it. It’s a fun twist on a sweet coming of age story. Oh and it was directed by Rob Reiner which if you’ve ever seen When Harry Met Sally you’ll know it’s worth a watch.

You’re the worst (TV Show)

3 and a half out of 5 stars

Another TV show I stumbled across while looking for something new to watch. I hit a comedy gold mine. You’re the worst is on channel FX and is about Gretchen and Jimmy who are genuinely terrible toxic people. Somehow they find each other and attempt a relationship even though it’s not normally their thing. Throw in their friends Lindsay (a former slut now married and not sure what to do with herself) and Edgar (an army vet with PTSD) and you’ve got a funny show. It really makes me laugh so I think it’s worth a watch. Plus it’s nice to find a good American comedy with no laugh track – at least one that I haven’t already watched! There’s two seasons and they’ve just been renewed for a third. How had I not heard of this show before?

Current Obsessions

Since I’ve been stuck in a rut with ideas for blogging recently, I thought I’d let you know what I’ve been up to recently.

Reading
The Mistborn book series

IMG_0860

The Mistborn series is definitely filling a Harry Potter esque series shaped hole in my life right now. In a nutshell, it’s about a street girl called Vin who has special powers and joins a team to overthrow the evil ruler that has enslaved her people. It’s nice to find a book like this that has a girl as the main point of view and I’m excited to read the remaining 3 books.

Watching

New Girl

newgirl

All about a girl called Jess who catches her boyfriend cheating on her so moves in with 3 guys she met on the internet. Funny situations a-go-go. The idea has been done before, people in their late 20s/early 30s living together etc but I have to say I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. The cast gel really well together and there’s a fair few situations I haven’t ever seen before. It’s not often I can watch something over and over in such a short period of time.

I just love it, and I want Zooey Deschanel’s  wardrobe. Will definitely have to do a style post on Jess soon! Plus I want to live in their loft. It’s gorgeous! But I’m not surprised considering I’m a sucker for exposed brick.

The only sad thing is that I’m completely up to date with America now so I have to wait every week for the next episode. I’m used to finding shows that are way ahead so I can just binge on them but this is going to take some patience.
The Amazing Race

AmazingRace-520x388

This definitely has to be my top game/reality show ever. It’s an American program where teams of two race around the world for a million dollars. Each leg they have different tasks and the last team to get to the end of each leg is out. I would love to be on this show, it looks like such an adventure! Plus, Phil the host is awesome – especially his eyebrow (see below)!

Me and the bf love this show and have watched all 21 seasons. There’s always a team you love and a team you hate so we spend plenty of time yelling at the laptop. I need to see if these are available on DVD!

Lusting over
Modcloth

Ah Modcloth, you’re so out of my price range but I just can’t help myself but look. The clothes and accessories are so cute and quirky – completely my style. I guess I will just have to wait until I’m rich to be able to shop there! For now, it’s all about the window shopping.

Craving
Pancakes

Maybe it’s because I haven’t had them in so long but since pancake day I have not stopped craving pancakes. I used to have them every day for breakfast as a kid and really miss that. Definitely going to make some tonight!
